Demons I’ve faced as an exorcist

Father Gary Thomas

Father Gary Thomas

In his latest film, Anthony Hopkins plays a priest who casts out the Devil… but the churchman who advised him on set reveals here how he has dealt with the real thing…The images are terrifying. Girls scream in agony, their bodies inhumanly contorted. They spit curses and growl in unknown tongues. Demonic possession, and those who battle it, have been a recurrent theme in films from 1973’s classic The Exorcist to this month’s thriller The Rite.

But to Father Gary Thomas The Rite is no Hollywood fantasy. It’s his life. The movie tells the story of the clergyman’s own chilling journey to becoming an exorcist, learning all he knows about battling the Devil from a venerable priest, played on screen by Oscar winner Sir Anthony Hopkins.

“I don’t think I’d ever seen Satan until I became an exorcist,” says Father Thomas, who spent a week on the movie set in Hungary as an adviser. “I’m not offended if someone doesn’t believe it. What I’ve described, I’ve seen.” Hopkins plays Father Lucas, based on Father Thomas’s mentor, Rome’s leading exorcist Father Carmine De Filippis. In the film Father Thomas is renamed Michael Kovak, played by Colin O’Donoghue, Irish star of TV series The Tudors.

But as filming progressed, the cast grew nervous of demonic possession. “The producer and the two key actors all asked me privately if they could be attacked by doing this movie,” says Father Thomas. “I said: ‘I can’t absolutely say yes or no,’ which led me to say: ‘possibly.’ They were afraid.”

Nazi spaceship film sparks UFO debate

A Nazi UFO from Iron Sky

A Nazi UFO from Iron Sky

A new sci-fi film about Nazis has reignited a debate in Germany about Hitler’s development of UFOs.

The Finnish sci-fi comedy ‘Iron Sky’ centres on real-life SS officer Hans Kammler who was said to have made a significant breakthrough in antigravity experiments towards the end of WW2.

The film relates how, from a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late 1945 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne – Black Sun – on the dark side of the Moon.

‘Paranormal Activity’: Midnight screamings across the country

Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity

Horror fans, the wait is now officially over — or it could be soon, depending on where you live. On Sept. 25, Paramount Pictures will finally release Paranormal Activity, the super low-budget indie that fright flick fanatics have been foaming at the mouth to see since its storied debut at the January 2008 Slamdance fest. On Sept. 24, the movie — about a young San Diego couple terrorized by things that go bump in the night — will screen at midnight at the Alamo Draft House in Austin, Tex. as part of über-geek Harry Knowles’ Fantastic Fest. Prepare to be freaked out. At a recent screening in Toronto, a packed audience gasped and screamed as they watched actors Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston become increasingly unhinged in the presence of a (potential) demon. Think Blair Witch, but in a cozy suburban house. (The latest trailer embedded here.)

The Fourth Kind Trailer

I saw this trailer last night before D-9 and it looks damn good. Now the film claims to be based on true events that occurred in Nome, Alaska, where people have been disappearing at an alarming rate since the 70′s.  Of course when I went and looked online for some evidence I couldn’t find Jack. So I’m wondering if this could be another case of a Blair Witch marketing blast. Oh and the film, which you will see in the trailer, also claims to integrate actual video footage from case studies done by Dr. Abigail Tyler. Again, sounds a bit Blair Witchey but never the less looks to be a real freaky alien abduction flick. {video source: Mindfreak07051987}

The Matter of Everything Trailer

The Matter Of Everything is a feature documentary that challenges us to see beyond our everyday sense of experience into the unseen universe. From the quantum to the cosmos, The Matter Of Everything journeys deep out of the foundations of nature to reveal what we are, at billionths of the human scale. At that level, physicists at Fermilab, one of the largest particle research facilities in the world, describe a universe that is more unified than ever imagined. {source: RiverchoirFeed}

The new trailer gives you a much better look at the actual story of the film and how the doc-style cinematography will by employed.
