New secrets revealed?

Modern technology may be the key to unlock hidden secrets about an ancient monument: Stonehenge.

Researchers are using lasers to scan the nearly three dozen stones, or megaliths, that make up the famous circular complex on the Salisbury Plain of southern England.

The vertical stones — over 10 feet tall and weighing many tons — form the site that’s believed to be nearly 5,000 years old. And nobody is sure why or how Stonehenge was originally built.

“This new survey will capture a lot more information on the subtleties of the monument and its surrounding landscape,” said Paul Bryan of English Heritage, an adviser to the British government on historic buildings and monuments.

Standing in a vast, mosquito-infested swamp in the pounding heat of southern Spain, Paul Bauman did not feel as though he was on the verge of uncovering a legendary world.

“I’m not a myth chaser, I’m not into pyramids or alien landings,” said the Calgary based geophysicist. “It crossed my mind more than once, ‘What are we doing here on this wild goose chase?’”

But Mr. Bauman, who works at Alberta engineering company WorleyParsons, where he spends most of his time tracking contaminants or searching for water supplies, was part of an international team that now claims to have located the lost world of Atlantis.

Giza Tunnels (wikipedia)

An enormous system of caves, chambers and tunnels lies hidden beneath the Pyramids of Giza, according to a British explorer who claims to have found the lost underworld of the pharaohs.

Populated by bats and venomous spiders, the underground complex was found in the limestone bedrock beneath the pyramid field at Giza.

“There is untouched archaeology down there, as well as a delicate ecosystem that includes colonies of bats and a species of spider which we have tentatively identified as the white widow,” British explorer Andrew Collins said.

One Big Cemetery

So after all the theories and studies it’s really no secret, just a big cemetery.

Huge, intriguing stones mark burial site, archaeologists conclude, for family that ruled region many generations.

Washington —- The secret of Stonehenge has been solved: The mysterious circle of large stones in southern England was a burial ground for almost five centuries, and it probably holds the remains of a family that long ruled the area, new research concludes.

Based on radiocarbon-dating of cremated bones up to 5,000 years old, researchers with the Stonehenge Riverside Archaeological Project said they are convinced that the area was built and grew as a “domain of the ancestors.”

“It’s now clear that burials were a major component of Stonehenge in all its main stages,” said Mike Parker Pearson, archaeology professor at the University of Sheffield in England and head of the project. “Stonehenge was a place of burial from its beginning to its zenith in the mid-third millennium B.C.”

Well, I thought I was going to be stuck inside all day due to the crappy New England weather. But guess what, the weather geniuses were wrong again and now the sun seems to be poking out. What a shock?! So maybe I won’t be sitting on my duff all day. Which means I need to pump this post out as fast as possible before the weather changes. Anyway, I had plans to switch gears a bit and get away from the ghosts and demons and look into some UFO stuff. And I came across what looks like a really cool UFO conference that will be available online at ufostream.com if you can’t get to San Diego.

It’s a six hour live broadcast with near HD quality (I don’t know what near HD is but it sounds relatively impressive), multi-angle camera views and live chat. The price of online admission is twenty bucks, which to me doesn’t seem that bad considering I can run to my own bathroom whenever I want. Plus, the list of speakers is sick. You’ll hear from George Noory, Dr. Roger Leir, Jose Escamilla, Erik Poltorak, Jason Martell, John Greenewald Jr. and Giorgio Tsoukalos. And some of the topics discussed will be alien implantation, what NASA is hiding from the public, the search for Planet X, 2012 and the ancient astronaut theory. Alright Mister Google, I’m going to let you have this one, but we aren’t done yet. Just keep that in your head and have your fun.  And while your at it thanks for taking a serious scientific approach,  ”Some have speculated that these are the plow marks of seafloor farming by aliens.” What’s that all about?! Now I didn’t see this comment on any blog. I might’ve missed it but that sounds real funny:). Why is it being dismissed so quickly? Aren’t we here to investigate the unknown.

One thing that Google’s blog did was put an interesting question in my head. Was this a publicity stunt to get people using Google Earth. Ocean in Google Earth is relatively new and unknown except for a few geeks like us. This will probably pop back into my head with any future questionable discoveries. And please, don’t get me wrong, I will still continue to enjoy flying over Area 51 using Google Earth discovering leftovers they forgot to remove.

As far as Atlantis goes, I think someone should investigate this in depth. This is the same old story we get time after time from scientists with the UFO phenomenon. There’s never enough proof to warrant an investigation. Or my personal favorite is “Don’t you think we would love to announce that we found Atlantis?”. Sounds a lot like NASA’s speech about life on Mars. Anyway, I’m getting carried away, but I just don’t understand these so-called specialists who refuse to look into anything. I don’t know what or who to believe anymore. [googleblog]

So what’s the deal? Is it Atlantis or is it some quirk of Google Maps imaging technology? Is it even paranormal? Well if anything it’s a mystery that people have been trying to solve for centuries. And it seems every few years there’s a new claim of the discovery of the ancient land of Atlantis. The latest occurred last week when Google Earth’s mapping of the ocean floor displayed a rectangle the size of a small state off the coast of Africa. The site is filled with right angles which would appear to be man made. But as expected Google came right out and stated that it was just sonar lines. However, there are those already not buying into the explanation. Seems like this one may need further investigation. [via DailyTech]
