‘Paranormal Activity’: Midnight screamings across the country

Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity

Horror fans, the wait is now officially over — or it could be soon, depending on where you live. On Sept. 25, Paramount Pictures will finally release Paranormal Activity, the super low-budget indie that fright flick fanatics have been foaming at the mouth to see since its storied debut at the January 2008 Slamdance fest. On Sept. 24, the movie — about a young San Diego couple terrorized by things that go bump in the night — will screen at midnight at the Alamo Draft House in Austin, Tex. as part of über-geek Harry Knowles’ Fantastic Fest. Prepare to be freaked out. At a recent screening in Toronto, a packed audience gasped and screamed as they watched actors Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston become increasingly unhinged in the presence of a (potential) demon. Think Blair Witch, but in a cozy suburban house. (The latest trailer embedded here.)

The rickshaw-haunting ghosts of Mount Road

Mount Road (Chennaionline Archives)

Mount Road (Chennaionline Archives)

There were not many buses in those days in Chennai and even the buses that were plying were relatively smaller. The other alternatives available for the commuters were the hand-drawn-rickshaw or the horse-drawn-cart, popularly known as kai-rickshaw and jutka. There was a belief in those days – I am talking about 40 or 50 years back – that ghosts would follow anyone who travels by a rickshaw through Mount Road. Yes, I am talking about the present Anna Salai.

My friend used to describe how a ghost would look like. ‘You know a ghost is not white in colour. It is jet black. It should be around fifty to sixty feet tall and its legs would be as red as burning coals.’ He was travelling the Mount Road for years together in ‘kai-rickshaw’ followed by apparitions and died when he was sixty.

Paranormal Activity (screenrant)

Paranormal Activity (screenrant)

No need to double-check, you read that headline right.

The folks over at Dreamworks (a division of Paramount) have reminded us of a time when being a movie studio actually meant something, by deciding NOT to remake the already-horrifying Paranormal Activity. In unrelated news, a recent survey of Hell shows the climate of the region down ten degrees from this time yesterday.

UFology and Science – can they co-exist?

UFOs over Washington, D.C., 1952(ufocasebook)

UFOs over Washington, D.C., 1952(ufocasebook)

For many years “UFology” – or the study of the UFO phenomenon has generally been dismissed by the scientific community.  Many scientists continue to debunk the reality of UFO’s even in light of the fact that a recent national survey indicated that nearly 70 percent of the American public believes that UFO’s are real, and that they most likely are guided by intelligent beings from other worlds or dimensions.  There is ample evidence from credible witnesses including: former NASA astronauts and Russian cosmonauts, ex-military, and law enforcement officers.  So, what will it take to convince mainstream science to seriously consider the possible existence of UFO’s?  Patricia B. Corbett, in her article “UFOs-A Challenge to Mainstream Science”, suggests that it is essential to prevent this important phenomenon to serious scientists it a context with which they can identify, namely the discipline of science as it is practiced today.  Second, it is equally important to show that the tools of science can be used to investigate the UFO phenomenon, and to reach valid conclusions.

Is that the time? It will be

What is it? Where is it? When is it? (Shareware)

What is it? Where is it? When is it? (Shareware)

Until his relativistic views emerged as the new physics of the 20th century and beyond, scientists, thinkers and science fiction writers let the human imagination run wild with the most elusive phenomena in the universe – time. But what is it? Where is it? When is it?

The space-time continuum described by Einstein is four dimensional.

Famous UFO Photos: 1870, Mt. Washington, New Hampshire

Oldest UFO photo. (ufocasebook)

Hmm, some say a swastika can be seen on the side of this UFO. But I’m guessing it’s just another healthy dose of pareidolia.

This photo is dubbed, “the oldest UFO photograph ever taken.” This item was the subject of bidding at Ebay in 2002, when finally the photo was purchased for $385.00 by Samuel M. Sherman, who was the president of Independent-International Pictures Corp. This was originally a “stereo” photograph. Certainly it was difficult to manipulate photos at that time, and remember, there were no flying objects then; at least, not from this world. {source: ufocasebook}

A Brief History of Christian Demonology

The Temptation of Christ 1854 (wikipedia)

The Temptation of Christ 1854 (wikipedia)

The roots of demonology are nearly impossible to trace.  A brief study of world religions both current and past turns up a variety of malevolent beings that behave in similar ways to how Christians perceive demons.  It is known for example that the grimoires, books of magic, used in Babylon and Sumeria refer to evil spirits that cause disease and other ills.  These texts also contained spells for driving them off and recommendations of ways to ward them off.  While this is the earliest written example of demonology it can also be reasonably inferred that traditions of malevolent spirits that were not of human origin go back even farther.  Beliefs found both among the Native Americans and   in Africa reference evil spirits that interact with human beings up to and including possession.
